Electromagnetic flow meter, also known as magnetic flow meter or mag meter does not have any moving parts. Magnetic flow meters do not create any pressure drops in the system and are suitable for all conductive or water-based liquids. Mag meters are cost-effective, reliable, bi-directional, and deliver highly accurate volumetric flow measurement.

Working Principle of Magnetic Flowmeters

Magnetic flowmeters operate based on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. This principle states that a voltage is induced when a conductor moves through a magnetic field. In the case of a magnetic flowmeter, the flowing liquid acts as the conductor. Magnetic flowmeters work by creating a magnetic field across the flow tube using magnetic coils. As conductive liquid flows through this magnetic field, it cuts across the magnetic lines of force, which induces a voltage across the electrodes. The induced voltage is directly proportional to the fluid’s velocity, meaning the faster the flow, the higher the voltage generated. This voltage is then captured by the electrodes and sent to a transmitter, where it is processed into a flow rate reading, which can be displayed in units such as liters per second or gallons per minute. Components of a Magnetic Flow Meter:

› Magnetic Field Coils: These coils generate a magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of flow.
› Electrodes: Located on the walls of the flow tube, these electrodes measure the voltage generated by the liquid as it flows through the magnetic field.
› Flow Tube: The non-magnetic, non-conductive tube through which the liquid flows.

The FLOW-38 electromagnetic flow meter is designed for a wide range of fluid measurements in various industries such as water and wastewater, agriculture or irrigation systems, food processing (dairies, breweries, etc.), the paper industry, power engineering, and mining. Because the electromagnetic flow meter design does not leave any protruding wetted parts or obstructions in the pipe, it can be used for an array of applications, from clean and sanitary liquids to slurries and highly abrasive or corrosive fluids.

FLOW-38 Magnetic Flowmeter is Offered in Three Display Types

The meter’s transmitter is offered in three versions. The first is the standard design (field display head), the advantage of which is primarily its high IP rating (IP67) or rotatability of up to 350° that offers maximum convenience while taking reading off the screen in the field. The standard design can be made either in compact (meter-mounted) or separated versions (remote or wall mounted). The second type of design is the DIN rail design that offers the possibility of mounting the display on all standard DIN rails in the market. Lastly, the panel design allows the users to mount the display remotely in an electrical panel inside a control room.

The flow meter offers a wide range of outputs and communications for connecting to a SCADA or various other control systems. There are two pulse outputs for the customer (400 Hz max.) with the optional setting to flow switch/state/direction, 4÷20 mA current output or RS485 communication (M-BUS/Mod-Bus protocols). Data can be stored in micro SD card also in datalogger mode.

Users have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of liner materials to match their applications. These options include hard and soft rubber, rubber with certificate for drinking water, PTFE, PFA or E-CTFE. Users can also choose various types of process connections to match their process requirements, such as flange, sandwich, (inter-flange), threaded and dairy screwed (DIN 11851) or clamp types.
